The 12-Point Pre-Monsoon Home Pest Checklist

The week before monsoon arrives is the single highest-leverage window for pest prevention in South Indian homes. A focused 90-minute walkthrough of your home, with no chemicals and no specialised equipment, prevents the majority of common monsoon pest issues. Here's the checklist we give every new residential customer before their first paid treatment.

Kitchen (15 minutes)

• Empty under-sink cabinet. Check for water stains, damp patches, or visible mould — these are cockroach attractants. Dry thoroughly.
• Pull refrigerator out from wall. Vacuum the condenser coils (dust + moisture = ideal cockroach habitat).
• Inspect all food storage for open packets. Transfer to airtight containers — open dry-goods packaging is the #1 entry point for stored-product pests.
• Check garbage bin seal. A bin that doesn't close tightly is a cockroach magnet during monsoon.

Bathrooms (10 minutes)

• Check the drain cover. Replace if cracked or missing — drains are the primary cockroach entry route in shared-wall apartments.
• Look for silicon seal gaps around the commode base and sink. These gaps are silverfish highways during monsoon humidity.
• Inspect the exhaust fan. If it doesn't have a flap or the flap is stuck open, that's a direct opening to the building's shared ductwork — and to every pest in the building.

Balcony and exterior (20 minutes)

• Empty all plant saucers, buckets, and any container that can hold water. Mosquitoes breed in as little as 10ml of water.
• Check that balcony drain is clear. Clogged balcony drains are the most common cause of indoor mosquito surges in apartment complexes.
• Inspect window mesh for tears. Even a 5mm tear allows mosquito entry — patch with mesh tape (sold by the roll at any hardware store).
• Look at exterior wall for termite mud tubes, particularly where soil meets the wall. Photograph any you find for your pest control operator.

Bedrooms (15 minutes)

• Vacuum mattress seams and the gap between mattress and bed frame. Bed bugs hide here even in homes that have never had an infestation.
• Pull bed away from wall. Vacuum the dust accumulated behind — this is a primary silverfish habitat.
• Check behind wall-mounted headboards and picture frames. Spiders and silverfish thrive in these undisturbed corners.

Storage areas (15 minutes)

• Open every storage box. Cardboard boxes attract silverfish and cockroaches — replace with plastic bins where possible.
• Inspect stored woolens for moth damage. If you see webbing or small holes, freeze the affected items for 72 hours to kill moth larvae.
• Check the back of storage cabinets for rodent droppings (small dark pellets, 3–6mm). If present, schedule a rodent inspection before monsoon.

Building exterior (15 minutes)

• If you live in a gated community, ask your association about the building's terrace drain cleaning schedule. Clogged terrace drains are the #1 cause of indoor mosquito surges in apartment complexes.
• Inspect the area around your building's storm drains. If you see rodent burrows (30mm holes near drain covers), report to your association.
• Take note of any standing water in your building's common areas — empty planters, abandoned toys, clogged gutters. These breed mosquitoes that will enter your home.
