Carpenter Ant
Camponotus compressus
India's largest ant species — workers range from 8 to 15mm. Black or bicolour black-red. Does NOT eat wood but excavates galleries in moist or decaying timber for nesting. A mature colony can hollow out structural beams over 2-3 years. Often confused with termites, but carpenter ants leave clean 'frass' (sawdust) piles outside nest openings whereas termites pack mud.

Risk assessment
Plan a controlled response. These pests usually need targeted treatment before they spread.
Does not spread disease. Bites are painful but not venomous. Real damage is structural — untreated colonies compromise wooden beams, door frames, and window sills over years.
