The universal urban pest. 6-7mm long, grey with four dark longitudinal stripes on the thorax. Female lays 500 eggs in batches on rotting organic matter — garbage, manure, food waste. Egg-to-adult cycle is just 7-10 days in Indian summer heat. Flies regurgitate digestive enzymes onto food and then lap up the liquid — a primary mechanism of pathogen transfer.
