Indian Black Scorpion
Heterometrus swammerdami
Large (10-20cm) black scorpion found in damp, dark areas of South Indian homes — bathrooms, drains, beneath stones, and in firewood piles. Nocturnal predator that hunts insects and small lizards. Painful sting but the venom of this species is relatively weak — comparable to a hornet sting. However, identification by laypeople is unreliable, and the smaller Indian red scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus) is among the most lethal scorpions in the world. ALL scorpion stings require medical observation.

Risk assessment
Plan a controlled response. These pests usually need targeted treatment before they spread.
Sting causes immediate intense local pain, swelling, and numbness lasting 6-24 hours. Indian red scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus) — much smaller and reddish-yellow — causes severe envenomation with cardiac arrhythmia and pulmonary oedema, can be fatal in children. ALL scorpion stings require medical observation for 6 hours, especially in children.
