Powderpost Beetle (Wood Borer)
Lyctus africanus
Small (4-7mm) reddish-brown to black beetle whose larvae tunnel through hardwood for 6-12 months before emerging as adults. Recognised by tiny (1-2mm) round exit holes in wooden furniture and a fine, talc-like frass falling from the wood. Major pest in antique furniture, hardwood flooring, and structural bamboo. Often confused with termite damage but powderpost frass is fine powder, not packed mud.
