Highly venomous nocturnal snake, 1-1.8 metres long, with a sleek glossy black body and distinctive narrow white bands. Found across South India in fields, gardens, and sometimes inside homes at night. Often hides in rodent burrows, brick piles, and beneath sacks. The bite is initially painless — many victims sleep through it — but the neurotoxic venom causes progressive paralysis that can be fatal without prompt ASV treatment. THE most medically significant snake in India after the cobra.
