Indian Rat Snake
Ptyas mucosa
India's largest non-venomous snake — adults reach 2-3.5 metres. Olive-brown to black with a yellowish underside. Excellent rodent hunter (hence the name) — frequently enters compounds, gardens, and ground floors following rat populations. Often mistaken for cobra due to size and hooding defensive posture when cornered. Non-venomous but a powerful bite requires cleaning. Active during day and dusk, especially after rain.
