Garden Lizard (Bloodsucker)
Calotes versicolor
Common Indian garden lizard, 30-50cm long including tail, with a crest of spines along the back in males. Colour changes with mood and temperature — brown, olive, to bright orange-red during breeding. Often seen basking on compound walls, fences, and tree trunks. Beneficial insect-eater but their droppings stain walls, and large populations can damage ornamental plants. Males are territorial and aggressive displays can startle children.
