Russell's Viper
Daboia russelii
Heavy-bodied venomous snake, 1-1.5 metres long, with a distinctive pattern of brown oval spots on a tan-yellow body. Found in agricultural land, open scrub, and urban gardens near lakes across South India. Responsible for the most snakebite deaths in India due to its camouflage, defensive temperament when cornered, and hemotoxic venom that causes severe internal bleeding. Often strikes without warning when stepped on. Coils tightly and hisses loudly — a deep rasping sound unlike any other snake.
