House Rat / Roof Rat
Rattus rattus
The most common rat species in Indian urban homes. 16-22cm body plus 19-25cm tail, black or dark brown with lighter belly. Excellent climbers — typically nests in attics, false ceilings, and upper floors. Nocturnal and neophobic (suspicious of new objects), making trapping challenging without professional protocols.
